Virginia Wright McCarthy
Virginia Wright McCarthy, age 95 of Erie, died Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at Ball Pavilion Nursing Home. She was born in Erie on December 3, 1914 the daughter of the late Dr. John W. and Dr. Katherine Hayes Law Wright.
Ginny was a 1936 graduate of Smith College, attended the Cleveland School of Art and the Erie Business School.
During WWII, she served as a sergeant in the Women’s Relief Corps of the US Marines from 1943 to 1946.
She married the late John C. McCarthy on September 18, 1946 and worked as an office manager in Boston before returning to Erie.
An active member of the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Paul and the Cathedral Woman’s League, Ginny was also involved in the Junior League, the Carrie T. Watson Garden Club and the Woman’s Club of Erie.
She had a great love of English Setters, raising and exhibiting them and was a member and secretary of the English Setter Associations of New England and America.
Ginny was a trained watercolorist and loved art, sewing and needlepoint and became a professional embroiderer and dress designer.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a half sister, Elizabeth W. Kauffman and an infant half brother, Eduard Keller Wright.
“Auntie Sis” will be missed by her loving nieces and nephews; Walter Lee (Peg) Kauffman III, of Erie, Mary (Chuck) Gustis of Marietta, Ga., Peter (Margaret) Kauffman of Wirtz, Va., and Nancy (Joe) Byrne of Irvington, N.Y. as well as by their families, her brother-in-law Al Haag, and her McCarthy relatives.
