As we know, the Kauffman’s are buried in a variety of locations.
Walter Lee Kauffman 2nd – Our father, your grandfather, is buried with our mother, in Erie Cemetery in Erie PA.
Percival Barton Kauffman – Uncle Bart is buried at Arlington Cemetery, just outside of Washington, DC.
Their parents, Percival Coover Kauffman and Katharine Barton Kauffman are buried in Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Mechanicsburg, PA along with Uncle Walt, Aunt Edith and their father, Levi Kauffman and his wife Anne Elizabeth Coover, Kauffman, and his father, Andrew Isaac Kauffman and his wife Katharine Shuman Kauffman. Now Andrew came to Mechanicsburg after Levi married Anne Coover and set up his household. There are a number of original homes in Mechanicsburg including both the homes of Levi and Andrew.
Anyways, Andrew and his sons left the historic homeland of the Kauffman’s in Manor Township, leaving the Mennonite religion as well. So, knowing where Isaac lived, I set forth to locate the graves of Isaac, and of his son, Christian, his son, Isaac Baer Kauffman, the father of Andrew Issac Kauffman.
Now, Jere Dickerson told me that he believed that Isaac was buried near by. Isaac was a Mennonite leader and the local meeting house was about a mile away. Unfortunately, it was destroyed some years ago. I did some research and found a study by the Mennonite Society on the meeting house location where they determined exactly where it was and a bit about the cemetery and who was buried there. I believe that is the final resting place of Rev. Isaac Kauffman, unfortunately lost to the ages as a community of homes is on top of that land. See Abbeyville Meeting House Cemetery
I knew from the book “The Kauffman-Coffman Linages that Isaac on his death in 1738 willed his land to two of his sons, Andrew and Christian. We know that Andrew retained the farm and built the farm house. In the book, it says of Christian, “…was deeded 142 acres of the original Isaac Kauffman track but disposed of it and moved to a larger tract just east of Washington Boro, where he lies.” But just where is this farm located? I searched for months, finally finding the farm. The current owners, a Mennonite farmer and three generations of family currently have a dairy farm there.
He invited me to come down. When I arrived, he showed me the headstone for Isaac Baer Kauffman. It had been stored in the barn for many years. The exact burial place was unknown. I have not located Christian Kauffman’s final resting.
Really nice sight you have put together. I came across it tangently with my family search re: George Rupley who married Anna Marie Baer Kauffman(5Xgrandmother). They married in 1770 and had seven children. George died in 1786. I have found no information about Anna after the George’s death. Did she remarry? where she lived? and when she died? By chance do you have any information about her or their children? I think I have pieced enough information about 4 of the 7. Thank you for any information
Bob,
Thx for the note. I will do some research over the next few days and see what I can find out. Glad you are enjoying the site.
